The problem with ranking/lists is each list has its own criteria.
For example, I could design a custom list for my daughter, focused on affordability to her vs quality of the school. and flexibility. Guess what? What she wants will zoom into a state supported LAC in Virginia. W&M would probably come in first (no major declared freshman year). W&M is not the "best" college in the country, but it may be the best for her. (With my salary, aid is off the table at most schools.)
And that should be the focus, what is the right school for a specific student.

I would have thought it was obvious that this would depend on the evaluative criteria.

They would choose Middlebury if they want to be on a campus that has a small strip of restaurants and stores, and nothing else around until you get to Burlington, Lake George, Albany or Boston. Nothing wrong with that, it is what it is.

Applications were up 30% at Middlebury this year,
