I'm part Venezuelan and the convo sounds both private and innocuous. TBH, Venezuelan speaking English accents are cute. When my family does it, a lot of the words they pronounce sound cute. I wish people would stop actively seeking outrage; there's enough out there without manufacturing it. Or as we would say in venezuela - no es chevere hacer un bochinche sobre esso, pana!

This. None of us can live up to our own expectations. she needs a thicker skin and I lost a lot of respect for her. She just ruined 2 lives when a warning could have been sufficient. the world is becoming a boring place when we can't even make fun of each other anymore.[/quote

Okay I'll make fun of your kids to their face and if I make them cry, they should just learn to toughen up and not be weak.

They said her accent was cute. Yeah, that's really suffering there. Ever taken a language class? I think most of us have had our accent ripped on.

They were laughing at her. There’s nothing cute about laughing and mocking someone. And no nobody should be mocking your accent if you’re trying to learn a different language it’s plain ol’mean.

Both of these things can be true:
- the discussion by staff was condescending, unprofessional and ignorant
- In Latin culture such discussions are commonplace and accepted when talking about gringos

I would like to quickly address this issue. In Latin culture it’s also common place to refer to people by their physical attributes and call them gordo, flaca, chino, el negrito, chaparra, la narizona, but that doesn’t make it OK and things are also changing. Commonplace does not make it ok.

OMG yes. I remember my not chubby/not super thin friend's face the first time she was called "gordita ' as an endearment when we were in S. America together. Priceless!

PP here, agree, but it does somewhat undercut the "racism" argument. It's not just Latin America, people all over the world are pretty unforgiving when it comes to American accents in other languages.

That is quite a generalization and not my experience at all. Even if that was a little bit true let’s try to be better here in the United States and accepting of other peoples differences and accents. This goes without saying but especially in a professional environment. Ragging On accident between friends it’s not the same thing as a professional environment.

It's a "generalization" from my experience in living in five different countries in two continents so it's not like I'm just making it up. As far as whether it's "ok", I agree and clearly said it was unprofessional, condescending and ignorant. I'm not saying it's right but I do think calling it "racist" is a bit rich.

I agree. And I dont think we should backshelve important issues because we are in a crisis, but I do look at people who are "petty" differently during a crisis. Especially when they are OK with folks losing their jobs in the middle of a situarion like we are in, etc.

I do wish that she and the employees had talked to one another to iron it out. I feel badly for Navarro because it was public and that's probably why she feels a need to publicly respond. But part of this story could have been she has spoken to the employee (one is a permanent county employee) in person and given her a chance to apologize. Or whatever. We've lost the ability to see one another as human and not a press opportunity.

if a leader can't handle some unknown, behind-the-scenes workerbees making fun if her accent, then she isn't really a leader. maybe she should start tweeting out her anger a la Trump.

she should have ignored.

What has she accomplished? Besides getting elected and re-elected. What has she accomplished while in office?

Dp- I don’t have to agree with her politics or her accomplishments to think that people mocking her accent is inappropriate. I posted a thread that she barely has an accent I’m calling it cute it’s not professional.

It wasn't professional. It also wasn't racist or worth making national news. I would bet a lot of money on her having mocked people who don't pronounce Spanish words correctly.

So you agree Navarro acted like a 7 year old. This is life in public office.
