Depends on essays, course load rigor, and high school. The chance is certainly not zero as the PP said. We had lots of defers at our high school during the EA round. Many schools don't do class rank, but your son needs to be in the top 5%. A 4.3 at our high school is top 10%. We have a 6 point grading scale, so GPAs can be misleading.
No it doesn't.
Yes it does. When comparing students in the same percentile, the essays are a differentiator.[/quote]
They can be, but with almost 50,000 applicants (a 17% increase), a comparatively small state admissions office can do only so much. I've heard many admission officers say they read the essays only after they've first culled out the ACT/SAT/GPA/Rank (per profile sent by the school)/URM/Big donor/ possible big donor (called cultivator cases )/low-income and this year's new special category: first-generations, who received 952 acceptances in ED/EA at UVA for only 3,750 slots. Only after you are through those hurdles do they read the essays, if at all. And your region's rep. might read the essay, but unlikely if the applicant doesn't jump through the other hoops that are reported to USN&WR.

WRONG. Fairfax: 36 percent admit rate; Arlington 35; Loudoun 30. 1843 students from these counties admitted in 2019. ONE from Allegheny County.
Don't give facts to these people, they need a crutch to rationalize the deferral/waitlist/reject. The my kid didn't get into UVA parents here are a self licking ice cream cone, the world outside of NOVA is filled with inferior students that can only achieve admission by a handout, gross.
+1
But those are self-selected and guided by the public high school counselors. It is their job to direct the high school students to the best fit Virginia campus. That's why the percentage of acceptance at all VA schools are high.

This. They have admitted most of the class already and have over 20,000 apps (between RD and defers from EA) for very, very few spots.
Someone did the math in the ED thread and there are only about 300 spots left to fill in RD.
I think that’s some kinda “new math” 😂
Schools make more offers than slots they hope to fill. So I don’t think you can subtract the offers from the anticipated class size and figure out how many more kids will get offers in the RD pool.
Having said this, I concede that this is a though school to get into. But OP, my son had a 4.3 (as of end of last year) and got in EA, so there is hope.

But when? This is a new world this year.
This year. Though I should add that he’s an IB diploma candidate. So that likely helped.

According to the GPA/SAT comparison, OP's son likely doesn't have the course/school rigor such as those at TJ. So the chance is slim.
You can't compare GPA until you know the high school.
