She’s fine now. But the name Fern minds me of a sparse dance floor and uneaten cake.

Side note: My drunk Uncle Roy ran into a pillar at our wedding and had to be carried out by paramedics. We did our first dance with blood on the floor!

Roy and Fern are names marked with heartache!!!

My great Uncle Roy was a great guy who was happily married for 70 years and died at age 95. A bad association in your family isn't a bad association in everyone's family. I guarantee you can find someone who had both a great life and a terrible life for every name (I mean there are obvious historical exceptions).

Similarly just because you knew an Amanda or Julie in high school.who was mean doesn't mean your dentist's cousin's former roommate can't name their kid Amanda or whatever.

Fern is a great name for an overweight school librarian with unfortunate bangs.

I like it in theory, it does seem hipster and somewhat pretentious. But the IDEA is nice.

Except it sounds AWFUL and feels weird to say. It also sounds a lot like "Vern" (e.g., from those TV ads in the 1980s).

It's awful. I envision a simple girl with low IQ for some reason.
