I completely agree with you that everyone does what is most flattering. I do think some people do a side part that is too wide since the further off center you go the more it widens your face. Other than that, center or side, depends on your face.

2. I don’t have to chase teen trends if I know they look like sht on me! If were to do that, knowing as I do that it looks like sht on me, that would not be ethereal, that would be me, a 40 year old, not knowing what works for me.

Yeah I think there is a difference between “chasing trends” and having a look that is completely dated, like your moms friend that was still rocking the 80s poodle perm in 1996. I just don’t want to be that lady, you know??

My teen girls informed me of this about a month ago so I have been trying it out. It’s not easy to switch after 48 years side parting and my hair naturally reverts to side. But, I am trying. The good news is that I have broken hairs on my hairline at my side part that stick straight up in winter, so the middle part hides that. The bad news is that my highlights are on a side part so my roots right now are horrendous.

It is crazy to me that anyone has ever parted their hair based on a trend. I have never even considered that hair part could be trendy. I’ve always based mine on hair length (when my hair is short it looks best with an offset part and sideswept bangs) and styling needs (I like a center part when it’s long because it makes it easier to dry and pull back).

Some people look best with a center part. They haven’t been out of fashion for the last decade. And anyone who adopts one now isn’t “trying to look young.” It’s a hair part.

Oh, and if you can’t find jeans you like in 2021, you e never been able to do it. You can buy flares and boot cut now too! Skinnies, boyfriend, girlfriend, wide leg, carpenter, overalls, high waist, midrise... just run a Google search.

I did not realize we weren’t supposed to center part our hair for the past decade. Oops. My natural part is just a smidge off center, so 99% of the time I just leave it there. Guess I’ll be trendy now!

Cool. My curls always lay funny with the side park and it's hard to tame them. They automatically like the center part and now I can stop fighting the natural part!

Yeaaaaah, they’re out there, but you’re being silly if you want to pretend that skinny jeans don’t still make up about 80% of jean options. I just looked at Old Navy and most of their straight, flare and boot cut jeans are just slightly more generous skinny jeans. Are you old enough to remember what “boot cut” and “flare” meant in the 90s? There’s nothing like that now, not commonly.

I’m still pissed about a pair of madewells I bought that were billed as straight leg but are basically skinny. I was too lazy to return them. Gap now has these fabulous looking “loose” jeans that they are billing as 90s-style which I find hilarious because they are basically just jeans. Not super tight, not super wide, not super high or low rise. Just jeans. But I guess calling them 90s retro is better advertising. Sadly, they are already sold out in almost every size.

Everything that is out becomes back in again. Except bell bottoms I hope.

My DD is 12 and only wears middle part. For those of you who think it's a fad, DD styles her hair just like my mom did at her age - in 1965! So all trends come around...

The middle part is just a trend and I will keep my side part.

That said, a lot of people did this middle part tik tok challenge and I spent way too much time watching it, and I was surprised at how much I liked the middle part on most people, even when they hated it. It reminded me that we can be a little too critical of ourselves.
