No, I’m wayyyyyy past the age where gestures on Valentine’s Day matter in my romantic relationship: I feel deeply loved and valued every day. An evening with my beau and his beloved family (whose company I also enjoy) is fine with me. I would be fine with this, too. We can have a nice morning or day together, it does not need to be 24/7. OP is clearly older, already had a family, why does it matter who they gave dinner with? We are having dinner with our kids, one of whom is a young adult with a SO who will be joining us. They celebrated last night and are excited to get two great dinners in a row!

Hmm having to downplay and be condescending to others to feel better about your relationship is not a convincing strategy. In fact, it sounds like your trying to convince yourself how happy you are with this arrangement. I do hope you enjoyed your family gathering.


No i think the op is right. You can have private time later. Family is important.

We did brunch at a quiet local spot, and will eat tacos for dinner. Sadly, no sex because I had a D&C for a missed miscarriage yesterday so we have to wait till I’m cleared.

DS (13) and I just made a chocolate raspberry tart together that we'll have tonight for dessert. I'm cooking each of us a filet, some roasted potatoes and some wilted spinach. Not much else. Got kiddo some chocolates, but DH and I agreed not to do anything for each other. He just cleaned the kitchen, folded the laundry, and is washing out baseboards, which is my favorite gift!

We’re down south so he is playing golf with me.....and not with his buddies....and then I plan to cook the same dinner I cooked for him many years ago the night he proposed and hopefully the night progresses the same way it did almost 30 years ago though I will skip calling my mother.
