Vessel sinks look like a total hassle to keep clean. They look neat in commercial spaces where they are cleaned daily, but having to clean inside and out just seems annoying.
I'm laughing because I hate pedestal sinks too, and removed three of that exact pedestal in PP's photo, and put in a vessel in the powder room and a normal vanity in the upstairs baths, because we needed storage and a place to put the soap! Also, the easiest sink in the house to clean is the vessel. I don't know why people would think it is hard - - do you have trouble cleaning your pasta bowl?

Funny - I love them...millions of choices and styles. It never makes a mess on the surrounding counters. Love it.

After watching this episode, I am convinced they are something designers talk people into because they like the opportunity to select a decorative vessel sink instead a more utilitarian sink. This designer kept talking about how the sink and fixtures were “like jewelry” for the bathroom. It’s a classic form over function choice. Though they are so impractical that it makes them ugly to me.
Agree with PP that they are at least less offensive in a powder room where the sole purpose of the sink is to wash hands. But even there I’d prefer a pedestal. I don’t even like vessel sinks in restaurant bathrooms!
I don't care for 98% of vessel sinks, although I'm sure there are a few in powder rooms that are ok. I really hate pedestal sinks. No, they don't make your room look bigger, they show the plumbing always, and they look cheap. Just...ugh. (Also--can we just stop with the beadboard? So dated and trite)
We had a sink like that in our old house. I hated it because of all the edges and corners -- they gathered grime and sucked to wipe down.
Agree, and I can't imagine someone who thinks a simple bowl vessel sink is hard to clean would want to clean that!

Yeah, I hate them, too.
Yes to both of these! Water everywhere and banging my rings always.

I think these are really nice.

But in a powder room where you just need a little sink in the corner for hand washing, I actually like a pedestal sink if done well (I hate all vessels sinks).
I'm particularly fond of a classic pedestal in a bathroom with dark walls and vintage tile, with kind of ornate fixtures. Kind of like this:
Why do the light fixture and the mirror and the faucet all have different finishes aaaaaaaargh
Topic? I also hate vessel sinks.
To add visual interest. You’re not supposed to match everything.
