DP here. It's a little funny to see east coast folks creating this fantasy that they're being discriminated against in this thread. Pretty thin-skinned if you ask me, considering that the derision and ridicule of folks from "flyover country" are way, way more pronounced than the other way around. Provincialism exists in equal measure in most parts of this country. I'm sorry but no one is ever going to convince me that someone from Boston or Philly (or even DC/NOVA) is more "sophisticated" than someone from, say, Chicago.

Upper Midwest here. HYPSM are obviously well-known and coveted schools, but outside of that, the Big Ten schools are great schools (some of the best research institutions in the entire country), and are a natural option for a lot of smart kids. Think Michigan, Illinois, Wisconsin, Purdue. And for the far more ambitious and academically oriented kids, there are Northwestern and UChicago (although of course if you're in a position to send your kid to NU or UC, you're also part of a class of people that would also consider sending them to any of the Ivies or Stanford). Seconding that names like Amherst are not even known among the general populace.

OP here, I grew up in the South and I won't send my kids there for college for exactly that reason. I grew up there. I don't want my kids to have to go through the same thing. And no, not everyone who lives on the coasts goes to an Ivy. That's your prejudice and not reality. My whole point was that there's large swaths of a certain political party which seem to discount the idea that there can be multiple "real" American realities. It's a huge freaking country and with over 300M people, we are bound to have subcultures. So the idea that there is one "real America" is nonsensical babble and panders to a certain crowd. I always find it logically strange that one would discount the historical "real America" (the colonial America and our country's birthplace) as somehow not our current perception of "real America" because somehow the home of the Liberty Bell, the Boston tea party, and this country's foundation doesn't count anymore. That is just odd to me. But hey, bias got to bias.

Yawn, this faux outrage re "flyover country." There's no way someone flying over came up with that term, by definition they aren't thinking about what's down there. It's the people in flyover country who use it to draw attention to the fact they're being ignored, by the "coastal elite" blah, blah, blah. OP, I think I understand your question. Yes, in the places that you deem "real America," the drawing board is different. Most kids there would never consider an Ivy League school. The big decision is which state school (in SC, Clemson, USC or maybe the Cof C if you really want to party), or a SLAC in the area. Naturally, a hierarchy of sorts develops even among schools at this level and for the people who live in that area.
Generally, Clemson is considered the hottest ticket.
