Pros: get better faster the more you play and train with higher level players.

Cons: Parents no longer are the parents of the top Player on the team and now get the sympathy good job, he/she is working so hard. No more wow he/she is so good.
Ding, ding, ding...Otherwise, just keep them in the age group they're supposed to be in.

sounds like somebody is a little jealous they kid isn't good enough to move up or they have had a younger kid move up and take minutes from their kid

DP. Not at all. Only wonderkids should be playing up. If the kid can't make the A team (or make it and get serious playing time and be effective), they shouldn't be playing up. They will be able to get challenged appropriately in their own age group. I mean, come on!, most of these Clubs have 5-6 teams per age group, surely little Messi can find space to grow there. And, again, if he was a Pulisic, by all means---but when the kid is not effective in the upper age group--no need. Get the challenge scrimmaging and playing street soccer with others, or like a lot of other kids do---form winter indoor/futsal teams and play up in that environment.

Exactly. If you play-up and don't start or get substantial playing time I'm not sure it's worth it. The playing-up training environment is definitely beneficial, but game time is so important in the younger ages.

The 'playing up' thing is so over-used. If you are Dec. 08 playing with the 07s, ok. But if you are a Dec 07, playing with the 08s--come on. That's ridiculous.

Well that example is flawed, I haven't had coffee yet, but you know what I mean. A mere 24 hours can separate 'playing up'.

This is all you need to know about whether or not your child should be playing up an age group. If your child can not be a starter on the clubs older age group's top team, they should not be playing up.
