Yet another carjacking, just across Western on the MD side of Connecticut.

Dear Neighbors,

Unfortunately last evening I experienced something that no one should ever have to. Around 8:00pm I stopped to get gas at the Giant Gas Station on Connecticut Avenue in Chevy Chase. While I was the only car there at the time, the station was well lit and attendants were inside. After I pumped my gas and proceeded to return to my car, I was approached by a young African-American male (late teens/early 20s) pointing a gun at me. I tried to get into my car, but he grabbed me from behind and pinned me down to the ground. As I was screaming for help he was searching for my keys. After he found them he made his way to the car. When I made an attempt to try to retrieve my belongings from the car (dumb of me I know – no lectures please) he hit me in the face with his gun and I fell to the ground. When I got up he then sped off headed down Connecticut Ave towards DC. The police were able to locate my car in Southeast, DC thanks to the car’s tracking system (Kahu) and are currently watching it to see if there is any further movement. If not, within the next few days it will get towed to a Montgomery County Police site for their forensic team to conduct a search for any evidence. For reference, I was driving a black 2018 Audi A3.

I am very lucky to be alive and never in a million years did I think something like this would happen to me, especially in Chevy Chase. Even when you think you do all of the right things you’re always vulnerable. I’m thinking that with so much focus on the upcoming inauguration that criminals will take advantage of this opportunity. As this was an armed carjacking the police are taking this incident very seriously and have every intention of finding the guy who did this.

What’s rather unfortunate is that the attendees at the gas station had no clue as to what had happened and did not hear any of my screams for help. When I banged on the door and begged for help and told them to call the police, I was told to calm down. No one asked me if I was ok and they also refused to let me in as I didn’t have a mask on (that was stolen too). When I yelled at them for not paying attention I was told that I was crazy for expecting them to have come out and to try to help me when there was a man with a gun outside. I said that what I expected from them was to not ignore my cries for help and to have called the police immediately. Time was wasted due to their negligence and I will definitely be filing a complaint. I do not intend to ever get gas there again as I would never feel safe. Also their total lack of compassion and understanding is just inexcusable.

I don't think that you have fired a gun before. A 9mm bullet being fired from 100 ft, is no match for a 4000 lb car being accelerated to 30 mph.

I'd still rather just give up my fully insured car than (a) take a chance on the bullets hitting me or (b) kill or seriously injure someone, even if that person is trying to take my car -- if only to spare myself the additional psychological trauma from that part of an already obviously horrific incident.

NP but in that scenario you are assuming the carjackers won’t shoot you. I certainly don’t trust them to make decisions that avoid hurting me. I wouldn’t get out of the car.

Well, these carjackers didn't shoot anyone, so that assumption would have been correct in this instance. Why would they bother shooting you and run the risk of being charged with homicide if you just get out of the car, let them have it, and run the other way?

Because someone who has so little respect for private property probably also don’t have a lot of respect for human life. Carjacking isn’t something normal, well adjusted people do. I would not put my life in this person’s hands.

I also wouldn’t try to run them over. That’s a great way to end up on CNN and lose your job. Sure, they tried to steal your car and you were scared to death. But the mob will just see you as a Karen and label you as one.

Better option is to move somewhere this doesn’t happen.

Once they pull a gun on you, they've already taken your life in their hands -- it isn't up to you whether to put it there. The question is what's the best way to escape safely. Usually, in an attempted robbery, that's to comply with their demands and get away as fast as you can.

Yes, it also has to be a dopamine rush as well of a mush brain. After getting drug along on the first car theft, the post hit high must be impressive and it would not take long to graduate to car jacking if you are not thinking rationally. If you were a bit older and had a brain, you might think, "I'll stick to stealing cars and not using guns to force people out of them". But if you are 15 when you start stealing cars, why wouldn't you graduate to carjacking by 18?

Yes. However efforts could be made to form their brains , but the politicians can't be othered to address that aspect. They do spend some time in jail and could receive education, training and counseling and real support and monitoring on release. Instead they learn some new tricks in jail, gain street cred, saw off their ankle bracelets on release and sneak out past the by the hour monitor at their poorly run halfway house to commit more crimes for which their unformed brain provides judicial releif.

Are we really attempting to ascribe rational thought and reasonable reactions to armed teenage car jackets? Isn't the whole reason we are letting them out of jail because they are irrational because they have non formed brains?
