I intentionally mix and match my sheets. So right now, my duvet cover, fitted sheet and two pillowcase sets are all different from one another. I have three different prints and one solid. I tend to buy in similar color families - oranges, pinks, greens mixed with cream bases - all of which match the other decor in our room. A lot of simple geometric prints with occasional bold prints. When I buy solid color sheets and pillowcases, I only buy cream. I switched over from white as I noticed the patterned sheets I gravitated towards were cream based patterns and I hated using white pillowcases with them. Basically, I buy sheets that work within my larger linen collection, so there’s no reason to toss an entire set if one piece of it wears out or is destroyed.

I was able to find a same colored bottom sheet (different brand) and I used that. On our bed, it’s always the bottom sheet that goes, and most manufacturers only sell sheet sets. It’s annoying.

For each bed in daily use we have (3, parents + 2 teens) we have 4 sets, 2 flannel for winter, 2 regular sheet sets for not-winter. A set is on the bed, and the other is in the laundry or in the closet. Housekeeper comes and changes them every 2 weeks.

When a sheet rips or loses elastic, I buy a new set and donate the ripped set to the MC animal shelter. Used to keep pillow cases from the old set (kids used them for trick or treating on Halloween), but between ones we have and ones they have tie-dyed at camp, we have plenty and I no longer keep them.

The one time that happened to me I had white sheets with navy embroidery and the fitted sheet was plain white and lost its elasticity, so I just bought a white fitted sheet to replace it.

Same. I have a dog and occasionally have to use an old sheet to cover my sofa or floor or if I’m painting. Otherwise, I throw them away

We keep a few old sheets for drop cloths. Animal shelters always take old sheets and towels

Same. My pillow cases go unused and sit in my linen closet. I never thought about using mismatched sheets. I just get a new set. I buy $40-$50 target sets.

Yes. Sheets and pillow cases match.

Ours are white with maybe some embroidery trim. So we can swap any white bottom sheet. But otherwise they seem to wear at similar rates and we toss the matching parts if they wear or tear beyond use.

What about pillow cases?

I change pillow cases more frequently than sheets so I definitely keep old pillowcases that are still in good shape even if the sheets have been retired.
