The teachers who are currently refusing to do their jobs, ie all of them. They’re paid a yearly salary, right? They can work an entire year just like everyone else.

Studies show that high ses kids are only losing ground in math and not that much. If your kids are reading books they will probably be fine for ela. Also math is repetitve and easier to catch up on than reading.

Kids who need to stay back a year should. Kids who are managing to stay at or above grade level should move on. No need to force them to sit idle.

Of course it’s not going to happen. The kids who are doing fine and have other things to do in the summer don’t need to be forced into universal summer school just to make others feel like everyone is in the same boat. What a waste of money and time that would be.

I’m sure DCPS will offer something like this when the time is right- similar to the summer bridge proposal before it went virtual. Some kids will benefit more than others. It should be optional. I support this generally as a public policy matter.

But parents with means should stop complaining that we can’t be back to normal and get creative. Here we have 2 parents working full time from home with zero outside childcare. But we find the time to supplement heavily and make sure the kids are getting out for 2-3 hours of physical activity a day, often outside with friends (distanced/masked). With all the time we have not spent commuting or dedicated to lessons and youth sports, and all the breaks built into the DL school day, this is manageable.

If your kid is dumb, just say that. My kid is doing fine and does not need to repeat a grade or participate in summer school.

It will not happen. Think about the 2 bookends - kindergarten and 12th grade, just because you land somewhere in the middle and this year has been really icky the entire system is not going to reset. We can even get compliance on universal mask wearing... repeating grades is not going to happen, get used to it.
