As noted above, mailmen are not allowed to accept any cash tips. If I knew my mailman and/or if he ever went out of his way to do anything for me, I might get him some candy or cookies or something. As it is, he doesn't do anything special for me, and I don't tip him.

Every December, lists of "whom to tip for Christmas" are published, and garbage men are always on them. This has always struck me as being crazy. Why would I tip my garbage man? He doesn't do anything special or out of the ordinary for me, I don't know him, and he has a good salary and benefits from the city. I've never known anyone who actually does this. I'm not sure how I would do it, either, aside from putting a bunch of money in the trash, which would likely never get to the garbage man, anyway.

If I had milk or newspaper delivery, I might consider tipping if either person ever went above and beyond expectations, but I don't get either one delivered.

I'm not normally super-stingy with tips, but I do find the whole "Christmas tipping" thing to be pretty silly in most cases.

You think your garbagemen get pensions and health benefits? Those are almost certainly private contractors that are getting paid the bare minimum...

Not the PP, but in my city they are municipal employees and get good benefits and salary. Their pension is underfunded, but my $20 won't help with that. The only people I do holiday tips for are my hairdresser/brow person (but not this year because I'm not going) and daycare workers when my kid was in daycare.

The few times I’ve happened to look up the mail guy was stepping on my porch furniture traipsing from my neighbors porch to mine. And the trash people troll us by leaving our cans/bins strewn about the alley.

I have never heard of tipping a trash collector or mail carrier. FYIW, I am not a cheap person and we give several thousand dollars to charity each year. It just never occurred to me to give tips to the trash collector.

It's in my interests to tip my garbage men - 3 or 4 times a year I have some item (yard waste, old piece of furniture, etc) that, technically, is too big to be picked up on a regular truck. They take it every time. The $60 bucks a year I tip them ($20 each) is worth it just to make sure they know I appreciate them, and save me the aggravation and cost of figuring out how to get rid of this stuff.

I have had the same milkman for several years through South Mountain Creamery. The cash represents how much I appreciate how well he does his job. We get weekly delivery, so that's less than $2 a week tip.

I gave our mail person ( female) a $25 cash tip
The Wash Post delivery guy got $25 check that I mailed.

I do not tip the garbage people
