It's not the end of the world. My sister Margaret has a "family nn" and then a "friend nn" because we all called her Marge growing up but at school they always called her Maggie or just Margaret. But our parents didn't really mind -- it was really just a nn and not her name, and they have no issue with Maggie (though it is jarring sometimes to hear people say it). It just depends on how you feel about it.
