But the real reason that applications are up is that Elon was one of the first schools to announce (May 2O, 2020) that it would go test-optional and would stay so for three years. That was the green light for a lot of students with good grades who didn’t think they tested well to skip it and look only for test-optional schools and throw in applications everywhere (I’ve read as many as 2O here).

I can guess one reason why applications went up at Elon. I live in NC and each year they have a week of free applications for residents to participating schools in NC. My child applied last year, and Elon was not part of the free application week. This year, they were! I imagine a lot of NC residents applied to Elon during free application week, because why not?

Also, Elon is really working the US News list. The day the rankings came out last year, it was already updated on their website - front page. My spouse is actually an alumni, so I am not dissing the school. We get their alumni magazine and of course it was prominently displayed there, too.

My child did not attend because it is very expensive and no merit was offered. The school is pretty but the nearby "big" town of Burlington is really meh. It's kind of "country" and people who live there were born there and never leave. My spouse works nearby so I know it quite well. Having said that, he did very well for himself with just a bachelors from Elon, and loved his time there. I think the school has only improved since he went there. Still not worth the money, though.

Which companies? It will only out you if you are the only three people, and if someone did figure it out, who cares. Did you go to grad school or get the job through on campus recruiting? Genuinely curious about the school. Thanks for the info.

NP. I feel like my kid choosing to go to Elon would be like, hey, I am just going to close the door to lots of opportunities right off the bat. But it will be fun! His school basically made him apply, but he will not go there--I'm not even sure he'll get in, as they are doing some major yield protection and pushing applications that there's no tomorrow to preserve that stupid ranking.
