DP, and the NYT data clearly show that FL is middle-of-the-pack right now. It can be true that people there are handling covid terribly, but also that numerically it's doing surprisingly ok. They're testing ~100K people a day, too, so not too terrible considering the number of positives (that's around an 11% positivity rate, which is bad, but not abnormal in the US right now). Also, what high-profile politicians do <> what state health departments do, FWIW. There's a lot of bluster from the top but the foot soldiers are usually the same, boring bureaucrats they always have been.
I think people in DC need to get out to, say, rural MD or VA and see that there's a lot of covid denial right in your own backyard.
