Yeah, I've gotten two "waterbugs" that are still huge - they come up my kitchen sink so I cover it now and no more big nasty granddaddys.

It depends on the type of roach and the location. The smaller ones are German roaches, they're invasive and tend to show up in the kitchen.
There are harmless kinds of roaches (wood roaches I believe)- they get inside by mistake (usually in the basement)- they don't breed/nest inside.
The fact that you saw this roach in your kitchen is worrisome. You need to call a pest control company asap. They will inspect the house and let you know the situation.

They say that roaches lay eggs in cardboard boxes and in food can labels.

No, detached SFH.

When my son's apt had them (4 -5 years ago) they quickly went from a few to enough that you'd see several daily. And I did once live somewhere for 6 years where a single cockroach showed p once and no more every again. Makes no sense to me to call exterminators at this point. I've had a bat in the house 3-4 times over 10 years and didn't call them for bats either (and I've been in the attic plenty of times, wasn't keen on checking but it was ok).

I do wonder about food packages.

A young girl in our area died when a rabid bat bit her. She didn't feel the bite and bu the time they realized what it was it was too late. I would address bats in the attic.

What?! I think you’ve got bats in your attic. Or you’ve posted on the wrong thread.

I agree with nuking the place.

However, you can also try Hotshots roach bait. It worked like a dream a few years back when I had issues in my apartment.

If they live in cardboard could it have come from an Amazon box? We get a few of those a day.

We did also get fresh mulch this fall.

And we’ve never had them in any home of ours so we are clueless.

I agree. Of all the things I can deal with, roaches are a firm hell no for me. Roaches bring out my irrational, batshit crazy side.

Get the liquid roach baits. Roaches need water before they need food.

Our pest control company told us it depends on the kind of roach you're seeing--you may have a problem or you may have a couple that just got in from outside. Oriental roaches tend to come in from outside as seasons change (less likely to be an infestation), but if you're seeing american cockroaches then you probably have a problem.

Life tip: Do not ever watch the movie Creepshow.

Op here--better yet, what's the movie? "Joe's Apartment" I think.
