Why? I'm a northern VA democrat and also believe we shouldn't have to subsidize the rest of the state to the extent that we do. Particularly when it comes to roads. There is no reason for our traffic to look the way it does given the amount of money we send to Richmond.

This dynamic exists in nearly every state; it’s not unique to Virginia. Higher-income areas subsidize lower-income areas. It’s also the reality on a national scale: wealthier (i.e. “donor”) states subsidize poorer states.

I don't care how wide-spread it is. I care about meh tax dollars going to the rest of the state while northern va traffic is a nightmare. Its absolutely unacceptable. And to have the nerve to suggest that northern va add an additional tax to go to our roads! HA! We've already paid taxes that should be paying for our roads. Cut it off at Fredericksburg, Loudon and Arlington.

Of course northern Va subsidizes the rest of Va and that’s not going to change, but our infrastructure should be paid from those tax revenues too. We shouldn’t pay taxes to build a road and then tolls on top of that to use it. At least the latest toll on 66 is required to be reinvested in NoVa.

I’m a Democrat and very much hope that doesn’t happen. The equity mission of Arlington dems has run this county and school system in the ground. Wonder why we didn’t teach any new material in the spring? EQUITY!!!!

Well I don't know about best run state but this idea has been floated around for years.
There was an entire news story series done on it not too long ago by some local newspaper.
And I am sure it's not the first and won't be the last.
The series explained why the idea was nearly impossible.
I am too lazy to search for it.

No reason to split now that Dems control everything. I would prefer if NoVa could keep more of their money to invest in infrastructure, but I mostly want NoVa to be able to make their own decisions. The state prevented Arlington from charging a tax on hotels for no other reason than to harm Arlington financially. Time for payback.

Very exceedingly dumb idea. And I am a Dem and I literally hate Republicans and I make no excuses for it.

Dems in NoVa and to a lesser extent metro Richmond have paid the the state institutions of Virginia, from VTech to UVA to WM to VCU, and we would lose all of them if the state splits. NoVa would have to capitalize an entirely new state university system. NoVa would initially have by far the highest income and property tax rates in the country, as NoVa establishes public assets and a credit rating. NoVa’s Dem votes might be cancelled out by the redder votes in ROVA. And right now there are five statewide elected officials: Gov, LtGov, Atty Gen, and 2 US Senators. All are Dems. There is no reason to divide the state.
