It’s like the ugly stuff my mom wore in the 80s.

You guys are still wearing jeans during the pandemic? I've 100% transitioned to lululemon, athleta and aerie, and some Old Navy Luxe tanks.

I find it very hit or miss. Just yesterday I was wearing a green turtleneck from madewell that I love -- fitted just enough and a very flattering cut with a loose t-neck and a flattering dark green color. I have a couple other things from there that I don't wear, though, including their jeans, which I find uncomfortably stiff.

I'm 41 and only have a couple items from there, but just yesterday ordered about $500 worth of stuff! Hopefully it won't all need to be returned. Agree that the colors are meh, but the basics seem decent and I doubt I'll be doing much this winter that requires being really fashionable (sadly).

I agree, where do us 40-somethings who dress casual go before Chico’s but after H&M type places. I never fit into GAP stuff and haven’t tried Everlane. This is why I like places like Nordstrom Rack because you can try on a variety of designers at once. It’s still pretty hit or miss.

Look at Universal Standard - well-made basics/capsule pieces in a ton of sizes and a more grown-up color palette

I graduated to COS and Eileen Fisher on sale.

Late 40s, love Madewell but the color palette often misses the mark. Definitely not in my color wheel.

I am also in my early 40s and this year I have bought more Madewell than in the last five years combined. I have had a lot of good luck there recently and I consider my style to generally be on the more feminine side (I wear a lot of dresses, etc.). I like the fact that they tend to use a lot of silks, 100% cotton, and other natural fibers. I love the stuff I have gotten this year, including quite a few cute tops, etc. I used to think their clothes were hideous and I am not sure what changed! I am petite and have noticed that their styles do run short (which fit me well) but probably do not fit taller women.

As a 40 year old I like a few Madewell and Everlane items, but I think I need to be careful because a lot of 90s looks are back. This is fine and cute for 20 something women, but 40 something women look like they never stopped wearing 90s styles if they participate too heavily.

Absolutely agree, OP.

I'm 39 and also hate the mustard color! I like a lot of their tshirts, though I feel like they're all kind of the same (striped) and I now have too many of them! The jeans are OK, and I like the cashmere sweatshirts they have which usually come in different colors.
I don't like J Crew at all anymore, and get most of my other casual clothing from Hush, which is a UK store I really like https://www.hush-uk.com/int and places like Other Stories, Cos and Uniqlo.

I’m 46, and the vast majority of my wardrobe is from Madewell.

But also...I think a lot of their stuff is ugly! As others have said, a lot of the colors are drab, and some of the cuts are aggressively norm-core. But I’ve been shopping there long enough that I know how to find the stuff that will work for me, and I find stuff I like there WAY more than I do at JCrew.

I'm 5'8" and long waisted. I find that their tops are cut very short, and the dresses never hit me right. I think it is not a store for the tall folk.
