What do you mean by "other than Berkeley + UCLA" other schools are public schools for the masses? Let's compare...

UCLA: 31,500 undergrad enrollment; 68% in-state; 1400 avg SAT; 30.5 avg ACT; 3.9 GPA
Berkeley: 31,800 undergrad enrollment; 67% in-state; 1425 avg SAT; 31 avg ACT; 3.89 GPA
UMich: 31,300 undergrad enrollment; 51% in-state; 1435 avg SAT; 32.5 avg ACT; 3.88 GPA
UVA: 17,011 undergrad enrollment; 66% in-state; 1420 avg SAT; 32 avg ACT; 4.32 GPA
[Highestb]UNC[/b]: 19,400 undergrad enrollment; 81% in-state, 1385 avg SAT; 30 avg ACT; 4.39 GPA

In what state are the masses averaging these stats?

The Top 5 public schools are Top 5 for a reason. Not for the masses at all. Incredibly selective and competing with large national privates quite well.

UVA has the highest gpa, by a mile

Frankly, with the multi decade post-industrial decline of the Michigan economy, the grads tended to leave the state and therefore you have a huge diaspora everywhere else. The parents then really want to send their kids to U-Michigan, despite the next generation having only superficial ties to the state.

Meanwhile, tons of UVA alums stuck around the DMV because the economic opportunities were always favorable.

When I hear a DMV family considering U-Michigan, it’s because they’re transplants and/or can afford the outrageous OOS tuition.

For everyone not in Virginia, there would be OOS at both schools, and given the choice between the two as a MD or DC resident, UM is much preferred to UVa.

Schools have some significant differences. UMich undergrad enrollment is almost twice the size of UVA: 31,266 vs. 17,011. Midwest vs. South location. Cold vs. Milder climate.

Student selectivity is VERY similar. UMich acceptance rate is 23%, UVA is 24%. UMich avg SAT is 1435, UVA is 1420. UMich avg ACT is 32.5, UVA is 32. UMich avg. GPA is 3.88, UVA is 4.32.

Not sure how you're measuring preference. But in terms of quality, both are outstanding universities. Can't go wrong with either of them.

On this board, the responses will be people coming here specifically to be either boosters or detractors of UVA and/or Michigan. Not exactly random and impartial.

I live in VA and have family in the midwest so know Mich very well. I'd send my kids to either school in a hearbeat but would lean towards Mich for Engineering/CS. Those are likely the only areas where the additional cost would still make Michigan worth it. For every other field, I'd stick with UVA (assuming of course my kids are able to get into those schools). The ony other factor that I'd consider is the weather at Michigan. Coooold!

coincidently, most I don't know many non Marylanders who rave about UMD, UNC is popular amongst people living in North Carolina, Pennsylvanians are partial to Penn State and Pitt. People overrate their in state flagships- UVA isn't unique, it happens everywhere

At one point, UVA was the #1 public university. Not sure what the "rankings" say now.

This is a really silly question.

It's a good public school. But you're splitting hairs comparing it to Michigan.
