It is your house, OP. If you love barnstars then put in barnstars. Who cares what anyone else thinks!?! Do what you love!

I looked up the history of them years ago. They are the end of a long road that runs through the roof of the house. The star at the end was a way to have something decorative and not a metal rod or pole. It was a construction thing. I'll have to look it up again.

We are a diverse family who watches a bit too much HGTV but I really like the design. Just don’t have the pop culture info to know if it’s an outward sign of hatred or support for any political sides or beliefs/religion.

Dear OP - the Barnstar....is simply an exterior house decoration that has become more main stream due to HGTV, Chip and Joanna Gaines, etc....just like the use of a barn door for interior rooms/closets.

I personally am a fan of the interior barn door look and I could care less what others think. As for the Barnstar on the exterior of a house....see these great articles:

Honestly, I would never relate a Barnstar to anything political at all -- only on DCUM would you find someone saying a house decoration is political. I have always thought that it ties into being a symbol of good luck and with connections to Pennsylvania Dutch/Amish heritage communities.
