So - while the union may not be of MCPS level of power - they did not need it. The teachers refused to work.

Pathetic. She is such a weak mayor. She should give the teachers a choice: go to work or be fired.

She is going to be remembered as the mayor who banned kids from going to school, even when hardly anyone had coronavirus.

Again, when most of the private schools are also virtual, your vitriol doesn’t make sense. She doesn’t have any authority over the private schools.

In early August the DC DOH bullied the private schools into calling off their p!ans to open. Something similar happened in moco

I think we forget that kids lives are also controlled by their parents. Early Elementary students lives are literally governed by the adults around them - unlike college or even HS students.
I think there is a way to do it safely - it's going to cost us and be a challenge - but I'm bothered that there doesn't seem to be anyone trying to do it safely

The positivity rate in DC is 1.6 percent.

Health officials say the positivity rate must be below 5 percent for schools to open safely.

Why aren’t schools in DC open?

https://coronavirus.jhu.edu/testing/testing-positivity

Why has reopening schools in other countries and other parts of this country been a shitshow?

I hear from a private school teacher in the DC area who is teaching in person, and it sounds really risky. It is very likely that in person classes will be disrupted there in the near future and I wouldn't be surprised if she catches COVID.

Two third of the people in DC who’ve died from coronavirus were over the age of 70. How many 70-year old teachers are there? Only two percent of deaths in DC were people under the age of 40. Meanwhile children are the least likely to get coronavirus. Only three percent of all the cases ever in DC involved people between the ages of five and 14. Schools in Britain have reopened with no problems.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2020/08/26/health-202-british-schools-reopened-with-little-covid-19-spread-new-data-show/?outputType=amp

Also, think about how it disproportionally impacts people in the DC area. Who is getting sick? Who is dying?

You're quoting numbers, and I'm thinking about people's lives. Their elderly parents, immunocompromised, people with underlying health conditions.

How many teachers and students are you suggesting is a reasonable number to sacrifice?

Give me a break. I’m citing actual evidence. You’re citing irrational fears in your own head. Teachers are such drama queens. Why is it that pediatricians can see sick kids all day every day since all of this began but teachers can never ever go to work? Why is it safe for grocery stores and gyms and daycares and restaurants and private schools and the government and the zoo and museums to be open but not schools? Teachers need to learn to put on their big boy pants.

You're ignoring the schools that have shut down again because of COVID spread starting up.

I don't bring my kids to grocery stores. I spend the minimum amount of time possible and am careful with masks and sanitizing my hands.

The doctors office is setting patients that need to go in and restricts the number of patients in a given area.

Similar patterns for other areas that are reopening in a limited manner.

Why do you think a packed classroom with one or two teachers is manageable the same way 1:1 parenting is?

Ok, but you still don't address the issue. How long are you in the doctor's office again? I suspect, not very long - certainly not all day. There are still very few people in the waiting room.

News to me. My pediatrician has not been seeing patients. All telehealth unless really serious. In grocery stores and gyms, you are constantly moving around and not there for 7 hours. Very few daycares are open. Which government offices are open? None that I know. The zoo is outside.

You have a crazy pediatrician and a bad one. Most of them are seeing patients in person. Not like you can get a vaccine over the internet

+1. Op, the answer to your question is no. Bowser- and any Democrat- is far too beholden to teachers unions.

Actually, she nor Fenty have been beholden to the teacher's union. DC's Health Director is adamantly against reopening schools.

I guess a lot of you'll forgot that some of these teachers were protesting against in person sessions. I also think some of you'll forgot that some of these teachers said they would quit if forced to go back. So, while you are on here bashing the mayor about not opening the schools, maybe you should also be bashing the teachers who refuse to have in person session. Personally, I think it's wise for school not to be in session. As of right now, we don't know how this virus is going to affect us during the Fall/Winter season. Imagine the Chaos, if cases started to spike and we have to shutdown again...
