I will add, that there are probably some dogs that cannot be trusted. In which case there are some behavioral issues.

I think the crating thing is the difference between people who think of their dogs as pets and people who think of their dogs as family.

Only as small puppies for us.

My dog lives her crate. It’s in the family room where she can see the kitchen. Very happy in there. She’s insecure and likes where she is in the crate. We get up early and let her out. But we work from home always.

Her crate is upstairs in the office. When we all go up at night, she just goes and gets in the crate. If someone is using the office, she barks until she is left alone. If we don’t close the crate door, she barks about that too. We’ve tried leaving her out and it just seems to piss her off.

So cute! Dogs are such funny creatures.

No, she sleeps in our DC1's room; most of the time in his bed.

Yes. Every night. Same as pp, if allowed to roam she gets restless and barks. She’s got two super cozy blankets in there and I partially cover with a towel.

once I'm sure the dog is house trained and it won't chew something up when left alone I no longer use a crate. Dogs are pack animals, they need socialization. I've seen people make crazy dogs by locking them in a different room at night. Some dogs want the security a crate can offer, without a door, and some don't. You need to watch him/her at times of stress(thunder/fireworks) to see what they need, and I've found a lot of that is how you react.
My dogs have been much happier when I include them in my life, but why else would you get a dog.

No, she sleeps in the bed under the covers.

Maybe he or she is an expert trainer, but I’d argue that being an expert trainer doesn’t make one an expert in dog happiness.

If the dog doesn’t chew or wet, he can stay out of the crate.

We personally haven’t reached that point yet with a 18 month old lab. The chewing part.
