DO combine funds but be completely transparent about spending. Both spouses on every account and card. Agree on how big a purchase one can make without checking. Pull both spouse's credit reports annually (learned this the hard way).
Go to marital counseling as a preventative checkup, not just when things get bad. But still go when things get bad.
Each week have a regular date night and a separate regular "business meeting" to talk about the week's schedule, chores, finances, etc. Don't combine them.
