Things have changed with modern times. But they still get married very quickly by most standards.

I have a lot of Indian colleagues and the length of time of getting to know each other and engagement seems to me to vary depending on what area and caste you are from. I have had some coworkers who did something that looks closer to dating - met and then frequently talked and went on dates and then got married within a year or two. And others who had a couple meetings, were engaged after the 2nd meeting and were married 3 months later.

It’s not because she is simply from Guyana. India is one country but each state is like its own separate country. Food, community culture, language, customs, etc are very different from state to state. Many people want someone that has the same background so those things will be in common. As the show points out, it’s really a marriage of families. So already having a baseline of commonality for all members of both families makes it a smoother transition and better chances of success. It’s not a hard and fast rule though.

That may sound strange but try not viewing it from a purely western perspective of marriage only being between 2 people.

Where she is from, there are a ton of people originally from either Gujarat or Punjab and they like to marry fellow Gujaratis or Punjabis and it’s easy because there are a lot in that area to choose from.

So throw in not just a different state but a different country and all the differences that might entail. I’m Indian, best friend is Guyanese Indian and my cousin is married to a Trinidadian Indian. Indo-Caribbean is its own culture, food, language, customs.. There are a lot of differences amongst us but much more deeper commonalities than difference.

The prejudices like caste-ism, classism and colorism on display are kind of shocking, but as an American BIPOC, its kind of refreshing to see other culture's baggage.
