Jack Smth won't lose his job (though I felt he should've years ago). The BOE just renewed his contract earlier this year, and gave him a nice raise too. He was unanimously voted in -- that's what a bunch of yes-women our current BOE is. Remember this in November -- a few BOE seats are up for re-election.

The reason I say that is that no other country has managed to get COVID under control while still allowing even the fairly low rates of transmission that we now have in the state of Maryland. The countries that have it more or less under control all have rates of spread of less than 10 new cases per million per day. Some far, far less -- like under 1 new case per million per day. And when they see even a "small" outbreak involving community spread, maybe 30 cases per day for a few days... the intervene quickly and shut that hotspot back down for 14 days to squelch spread.
Montgomery County is really low spread right now. 221 new cases in the past week so about 30 new cases per day per million. But Maryland as a state is high. 71 new cases per million per day. And DC is high .... 61 new cases per million per day. And when we have outbreaks, we aren't doing much to shut them down, and neither are our surrounding locations. And with people going on vacations and returning to college from other locations, cases will only rise.
If people are allowed to pee in the swimming pool, you can't say one section of the pool is pee free. IF we have spread in one part of the state or country we are going to have spread in all parts. It might not come back to us for a while, but it will come back to us, and we are going to have to do another shutdown.
The problem is some of these countries that we are getting compared to are only as large as one US state. It's not a fair comparison.

I know we all desperately want to believe that Maryland has it under control, and things are going to be getting back to normal.

Maryland has been holding steady, but many states are not. Maryland has not required residents of other states to self-quarantine when entering Maryland -- yet.
The trends can change quickly, especially since so many states in the south are trending upward in cases. Hogan has said he's keeping an eye on cases in neighboring states, and he's also indicated that re-opening may stall if cases being climbing again.
What this means for schools? Let's wait and see. August may be another story entirely.

Every metric for Maryland is improving, and has been for weeks. Sorry you aren’t capable of understanding positivity rate.
The official local Maryland county email update I got today said positivity rates are up. But I know your kind. When positivity rates go up, we will hear, but death rate isn’t up! And when death rate increases, it will be, they’re “just” the old and infirm (they should be more careful, amiright?), then it will be, ok, more people are dying but it’s not as bad as NYC at the height, why are you being so hysterical and paranoid? always something with ya’ll.

Because it makes sense to look at the Death Rate and not just the number of positive cases! Why would you not want to do that?
If people are testing positive for Covid but getting better, then that is a good thing! Especially if we are aiming for herd immunity. Which we should be, because a vaccine is not likely.

I have been watching the stats from the state and Maryland has definitely been doing well. Maryland was able to flatten the curve and our hospital bed curve always looked in good shape.

The county has to submit their plans to the state, but they don't need the state's approval. Hogan cannot fire Smith.

Did this official county email provide any numbers or details? Because it just isn’t true that positivity rates are increasing. It could go up a little one day, but it’s overall slightly declining. The MD Dept of Health has a great, easy to read COVID dashboard for MD, the link that PP provided.
