I have had open shelving for about 5 years and my oldest is 8. I can understand how it might not work for everyone but it does for us. I’m also a bit of a clean freak so I don’t mind wiping down the shelves from time to time and I certainly don’t keep them stock piled like the pics. I have a more minimalist style on them.

Check out how this woman organizes her drawers. She has no uppers in the main part of the kitchen and all plates, cups, etc. are in drawers. You have to click through a few stories to get to where she starts opening all the drawers.

That's A LOT of shelving! It's not for me, but I think it works when there's a mix of open and closed storage. I like when the stuff on the shelves is simple either in number of in color.

My husband started talking about how much he liked the look of open shelving. I had to remind him that a) we do not live in a catalog; b) I will not be cleaning all the crap on the regular.
Cabinets it will be.

The kitchen in the pp has the shelves wrong. There should be no more than two levels if one's to do open shelving. This one has four, and it looks extremely busy, which defeats the purpose of open shelving that's supposed to create an airy look.

That said, I'm not fan of open shelves in the kitchen. Not practical at all.

This is precisely why I can't stand open kitchen shelving.

The idea is cute but its either useless or an eyesore the moment you walk into a kitchen.

I was trying to figure out what the colors reminded me of...they’re 80s shades. That pink/peach reminds me of the store the Facts of Life girls opened when they were older on the show.

The original kitchen was completely soulless, generic and boring, the redone kitchen is definitely much better, even if it isn't what I would have chosen.

I don’t love it, but like the colors. I hate the island. The floors are probably 165 years old.
