We don't have space for a live in nanny, but could do a nanny share if we can find someone. Husband sometimes travels for work, essential so its not getting cancelled. I'm going to assume I have to be in school every day so staggering a schedule won't work. Nanny share seems the best option at this point but would a nanny do my 2 kids and someone else too? That seems like a lot.

Absolutely, especially if it’s a family who th 1-2 kids who can/will play with your older child AND all three have devices to do their schoolwork.

So you find another childcare solution. A fulltime nanny is a privilege and not something for most people.

It's a privilege to be able to afford a nanny. Most families I know who have hired one have two parents working full-time and earning very high salaries.

I would say most people I know who have hired one have two parents working more than full-time.

I was a social worker. That is why I ended up staying home. Day care was a huge chunk of my salary. Plus all the other work expenses and it wasn't worth it.

I'm also wondering why you don't take a break for couple of years since it pays so little. You can offer to watch somebody else's child for a bit.
I make a lot less than a teacher but work opposite of DH. The peace of mind that comes from not having to scramble for sitter, has been the best part of it.

They make a lot of money. This is not a scalable solution.

I used to teach. When we looked at daycare costs for two, I quit my job. Teaching is theoretically an easy job to dip out of for a few years. Nobody knows what the economy will do, so it is a risk, but I couldn’t PAY money to work. I am sure that when you reapply, saying, “I would have had to take a $300 loss every month to work,“ or whatever will be a very common and understandable reason for taking a break.

How much are you going to pay? I feel like a good nanny isn't going to take this jumping around from kid to kid.

If your kids are elementary age, my guess is there are going to be camps open that are a mix of childcare, activity (like dance or whatever the camp does normally), and study time.

I'd hope to be able to pay for the 2-3 days I would need while the other person paid for the 2-3 days they need. But I do realize that nannies are going to have their pick of jobs so it might be hard.

The answer to all of these "how does anyone afford" questions is always that other people make more money than you.

I'm a part-time para and weighing if I should go back. I want to keep my position and retirement contributions but it might cost more than my salary to find care. I may try to swap with people or just become a nanny, though that would be a pay cut it might be easier logistically. I think some other teachers and paras will probably do something similar
