I read A Separate Peace back in 7th or 8th grade in the 70s. Thanks for the memories!

Phineas and Hazel -- Julia Roberts' kids.

I see a LOT of Finn now but not Phineas.

I had a cat named Phineas when i was little.

I have another relative that named their kid something for which Finn is the nickname, so it was somewhat handy that Phineas is not all Finn/Phin.
They're both okay, I guess. I think they were both really popular like 5 years ago.

We have actually considered Phineas Jaylen or Phineas Jasper with a nn of Phin or PJ!

OP, is this you? Phineas Jaylen is one of the worst names I have ever heard. It is just awful.

I have no negative associations with Phineas at all. DD had a lovely classmate with that name and his nickname was Finn, not Phin.
I thought Phineas and Ferb was a great cartoon when my kids watched it.

If you call him PJ, won’t the kids call him “Pajamas” or “Jammies”? We have had a lot of teachers jump in on different threads to let us know what kids do to names. I consider them the top authorities when it comes to this subject. Kids can do it with any name. Don’t give them ammo.

Op here - yes that was me. I like the name combination because it is unique to me. Do you like Jasper better? I'm not too worried about the nn, I just like that there are different options.

We would use nn Phin

Do not use Phin. That’s horrible. It looks bad and would never ever be spelled correctly. It’s Finn.

But Phineas is not good either.

Maybe Eas would be a better nn?

Unless you want your kid to get bullied.

I think Phineas is a really cool name. However, I don’t know if I could personally use it myself. It just doesn’t lend itself well to our last name and doesn’t sound good with my other kids names.

I'm not crazy about it. Finn or Phineas are usually the troublemakers ( at least in our school where I am a teacher)

Hmmm, is it possible that you are projecting your bias on to a child b/c of a name you don't like or a prior bad experience w/ a kid with that name? Think about that teach!

No. It’s really bad, OP.

Nope.

Yes, that’s it. He kills himself, or injures himself jumping out of a tree.

Phineas is too trendy and ridiculous for a kid. It’s like a kid I know named Maximilian. It’s a first-kid name, when you approach it like naming a pet. Later you realize the kid makes the name, not vice versus.

Actually he was pushed by the main character!
