I first ran into it in college where it was used to facilitate all nighters.

+1 to drinking it while in the military. Used to drink it all the time to help me stay awake on watch! Was more refreshing on a hot day than coffee, and I just never cared for Coke/Pepsi.. Just a personal preference, nothing specific to my middle class background.

Do you also wonder why African Americans like Kool-aid, fruit punch, and orange sofa?

Wow! I think I’m going to need a double chinotto while I reread my copy of Two Nations, and try to imagine what’s supporting these stereotypes.

It used to be high caffeine content in US and no caffeine in Canada. Don't know if that still holds.

I dunno. I drank it in my rich while high school and at Yale. Got the mega gulps with ice from Wawa. They didn’t have Red Bull in those days.

I don't care for it now, but one observation: when running errands sometimes I will get thirsty for a cold root beer (specifically A&W). It is VERY hard to find a single cold root beer, let alone A&W in supermarket or Walmart or Target coolers. You're stuck with Pepsi, Coke, Mt. Dew, energy drinks, and bottles of Starbucks. I don't keep soda at home, it's a once in awhile thing.

I feel this way about delicious, sugary, Orange Crush. :>
Sounds bad, but do you have WaWa near you? They have the soda machines where you can get almost any Coke product. They're awesome.

Same pp, but yes, orange crush sometimes too.

I also wish 12 ounce cans had not disappeared from c-stores.

And another thing! Used to be you could buy a small ice cream bar or ice cream sandwich in a gas station. Well, "small" was normal then. Now if I have a sudden ice cream surge all they have is giant ice cream versions of candy bars, giant cookie sandwiches, or possibly gigantic Mississippi Mid ice cream sandwiches. When all I want is a little ice cream sandwich.

It does have high caffeine. After I gave birth I had epidural headaches for three weeks. My doctor told me to chug a Mt Dew when I woke up so that it made going to the bathroom/ taking a quick shower bearable. I hate the taste and sugar, but it worked.

Mountain Dew's roots are in Appalachia. It was originally created in Tennessee as a mixer for moonshine and bourbon. Mountain Dew bottles used actually to have a picture of a gun-wielding moonshiner.
