You're not very smart, OP. The vast majority of salons are smaller than grocery stores, which means you are more likely to encounter any virus particles that could be floating around. And if you got a mani/pedi you were in the salon a while, even if you left before your nails were dry. Most people going to the grocery store aren't hanging out in there for an hour. And if it was anything like a typical salon, there were lots of conversations going on. More talking = more droplets. Most people don't walk around a grocery store continuously talking to other people.
But enjoy your nice nails that no one except you and all the other entitled jerks driving out of their way to go out in public will see. Keep telling yourself that you did it to support small businesses. What a load of sh*t.

Well, I’m a massage therapist. I’ve been without pay since mid March. So my viewpoint is prob closer to reality than someone wanting pampering. I understand the sanitation and safety practices involved for personal services right now. You really can’t perform any personal services safely though atm. The level off PPE, ventilation, and distancing does not currently exist in most spas/salons.

My SIL is a massage therapist in another state, also at home now and very worried about her business, but she would say exactly what you said above -- the sanitation and safety practices truly needed for ANY form of personal services just don't exist right now. I wish people blathering and bleating about their utterly non-essential nails and hair would understand that no matter how many plexiglas barriers their nail salon puts up or how many bags it uses to cover stuff, the salons are still going to end up spreading the virus. But people posting here don't want to understand that like you and my SIL understand it, and they think that hair and nails are vital. They are the reason we will see spikes in infection and probably subsequent closures of businesses. Selfish and ignorant, and unwilling to learn or change their minds based on science.
Thank you. I really appreciate your response. It was far more lucid than my own. It’s not easy to hold the line financially not being open for massage, but I care about the well being of my clients very much. It would be devastating to find that someone became ill from coming in to our office for bodywork. I miss being that place of comfort, but will wait til we have a more solid handle on safety to return. We need to know more about the quieter symptoms especially before opening massage back up. It’s not just about masks, face shields, and gloves.

There is a lot about this virus we don't know and no real coordinated national response yet.
I have an old friend who is a salon owner; she says she knows all about sanitation, etc... but has no plan to circulate the air more, get outside air in, or install extra air purification. What she does need is money to pay her mortgage, so she is excited about reopening.

My technician also had a face shield. They added glass to all the manicure stations. I did not dry my nails and left after I was done.
You’re not getting it. That’s probably not enough to protect you, or anyone else there. The air is shared ALL DAY LONG, for every shift. At best they can uv the place at night. If there is no time the place is empty between patrons it is not possible to properly disinfect.
Any surface you touched needs to be bleached before the next patron. And the places you were need to be aired out prior to
next client. Not your concern, but it should be. Who was there immediately before you? Were they presymptomatic or asymptomatic and just NEEDED a mani pedi?

2/3 of the country is partially open. The country is opening with or without you.
I went to a store for the first time today. I wore a mask and gloves as did 95% of everyone at the store. Store was not crowded.
You are looking at this from a consumer standpoint. And being very absolute. Waiting another month will only saves lives.
