It depends on your age and age of your guests.

I’m in a house that I plan on being in until I die/move to a retirement community. I need a main floor master and max of 2-3 stairs.

20 years ago I lived in a town home with a lot of stairs. Loved it at the time, had no problem selling.

When I lived in Manhattan my buddy lived in a six story walk up. In Manhattan more than five stories new an elevator. His has a bar and store ground level so floor one was second plot. He had cable guy pass out once. And no AC in building or apt. Cable guy on a 90 degree day with tool box wow

We once drove to an open house.....saw the stairs and didn't even go inside.

It was like 20 steps.

We have 18. It hasn’t been an issue for anything but some much older relatives who had to take a break halfway

I don't know if it came up, but a little side bonus to a flat entry: getting large purchases into the house isn't a big deal and moving things out isn't, either.

Our last house had about 5 and then a landing and then 3 more to a porch. The garage was on the lower level, so you could go into the basement with no steps (but then there was a stairway to the first floor kitchen). It didn’t bother me too much at the time, but I now live in a house with two steps from the parking area to the kitchen door, and I realize what a pita it was to bring in groceries in the old house. Particularly now I’m buying more groceries at a time, I’m so glad I don’t have to deal with that anymore. It will be a consideration, if we ever buy another house.

Is there a railing? Very difficult for some people without one.
