Why is this even a question? Talk to the parents and express your concerns. Feeling awkward is a hell of a lot better than a kid falling through your basement window or into your yard with a broken arm.
Our tiny yard is fenced on 3 sides. We "share" a portion of the fence with each of the 3 neighbors. Houses are over 100 years old and fences have just been maintained and rebuilt as needed. Common practice between neighbors is to share maintenance, costs, etc.

New poster here.
Many years ago when Dh and I were first married, we bought a home in a brand new neighborhood. Each house was separated by a fence that sound like OP's situation; the fences were the dividing line and neither neighbor "owned" the fence. Neither side of the fence was 'pretty" or "ugly" they were both the same.

If its a wood fence usually the "pretty side" (ie the front flat side with no supporting beams on it) is facing the fence owner and the ugly side (that shows the structural supports) is on the non-owner's side.
