My teen had "checking in" Zoom meetings last week, but now, apart from office hours, he doesn't have any live classroom time. I thought it was odd, but now realize it was preemptive...

What utter asses some youngsters are.

My HS friend told me about the behavior. My response was the typical: Kids are jerks.

Then she sent screenshots.

I was absolutely appalled. And I have a pretty thick skin and lots of patience for the idiocy that is adolescents. Some of those kids need serious help. Even at my darkest, I couldn't imagine coming up with some of the things they typed. And to know it would be seen publicly and offend others? It was DISGUSTING. BEYOND utter assholery.

Could it be spamming from outsiders, not from students in the class?

They had to give out the links. It was partially to go viral on TikTok apparently. My niece sent me a video they uploaded about it.

And I’m guessing all chat/video/audio is on lockdown for a long while. I miss my students and was looking forward to hearing them tomorrow!

That’s a great idea. Make everyone log into a system that has crashed the last two days. Brilliant!

It was like this for some teachers already. The problem was partially them sharing the link out, but also the racist slurs etc. Honestly, some kids were emboldened because they know FCPS can't o anything, so they had no problem using their real names.

If they typed racial slurs under their real names, FCPS absolutely can do something about it. So can law enforcement.

Who raised those kids?

From what I've heard, law enforcement is involved, but can only do so much because technically the school is responsible for what happens during school hours. Same if kids leave and get into a fight after school—if they don't go home first, it's a school issue.

My elementary aged child's classroom was locked down - if someone wanted to talk, they had to "raise a hand" and the teacher would enable the microphones. The chat feature was disabled.

They don't know in the moment, but if they wanted to, they could find out.

Any adult who has spent 3 minutes scrolling through TikTok would have anticipated this happening. The new thing is for the entire class to band together to prank the teacher or for just one student to be a complete ass.

And this is from individual homes. During quarantine. And a pandemic.

So can you imagine what they're like roaming the halls of a school in a wolf pack?

Then when the teacher addresses their poor behavior, parents accuse them of picking on their angels.

Now they're home and the parents can see what their precious babies are really like.

Parents really need to focus on raising their children instead of criticizing teachers.

That 'entire class band together to prank the teacher' is the same type of behavior they see some of their parents pull so this is not surprising.

Things went fine for my older ES kids, but I’m not surprised about the upper levels. I posted a link to the parody early on, but I think it’s spot on now:

I hope things settle down a bit, even though things aren’t graded (unless a student demonstrates improvement).
