I'm pretty shocked that pre-K kids are reading?! Is that a thing? We're moving into the area from Germany where kids dont even get exposed to ANY academics (writing, reading, phonics) until the August AFTER their 6th birthday. The expectation in DC is that your 4 year old is a fully competent reader?!

Some kids start K having never been to preschool and barely knowing their letters. Your kid will be fine starting K OP.

I would definitely redshirt in your situation OP. I have a child who will start kindergarten in the fall and I would love to redshirt her, but she would be too old. I’m not worried about the missed months of preschool, I just know that this thing is far from over. While the kids may go back to school on time, it will be a very disruptive year. I imagine they will have to go back and forth from in school teaching and online learning. A May born, small boy, I would definitely wait given what the fall will look like.

This is ridiculous. Your child has already received all the benefits that preschool was going to give him - he gets along with other kids, he can follow directions, he can stand in line and wait his turn. Missing a few months of preschool is absolutely NOT a reason to keep a MAY BIRTHDAY child out of Kindergarten.

Given the number of posts here, I really hope that the states/school systems pass some sort of law forcing people to send their children to school on time. Redshirting a kid with a May birthday is absurd.

Agree. August and no redshirting and neither are the 4 others in June and August and one on 2nd sept.

I have a May boy and he is going on time but it's pretty evenly split for the other May boys I know, so it wouldn't be "crazy" if you opted to do that.

Holding back a May birthday is ridiculous. My kid was born late September and has speech issues and I’m still on the fence. Your child will not benefit from being held back.

I see what you are worried about OP but I agree that so many other kids will be in the same boat so teachers know that kids are going to be coming in at a different place than in past years. Its not like your kid will be the only one--every child in every grade level will be facing the same thing.

I guess all experiences are different but for me, I didn't feel that my kids really advanced all that much in K compared to where they were at the end of pre-K. I felt like my younger son was at the same the reading level at the beginning of 1st grade as we was at the end of pre-K. A lot of K is getting all kids on the same level since they are all coming from very different backgrounds.

Prep for K?
Preschool is optional. Kids don’t need any kind of academic prep for K. Preschoolers need to play. They can’t be “behind.” Zero reason to redshirt because of this.

I guess I don't understand the rationale for this, especially for a May birthday.. All the kids are essentially in the same boat with respect to preschool disruption.
