But they know that then they also can't vote for mail? There's no evidence I've come across that expanding vote by mail actually hurts Republicans. They just seem to reflexively think it will.

Nothing, if they are actually absent.
Why does that make it any less open to fraud? Absentee ballots are not just for people out of state, but also unable to safely get to the polling station (sick, disabled, etc). That obviously applies right now, during a pandemic.
Not sure what the rules are now, But, I was a Florida voter many years ago. I was living overseas and voted absentee. There were a couple of hoops to jump through--it was not just a matter of mailing the ballot back. In fact, I may have had to have it notarized. Or, maybe just had to have someone witness it. I was on a military post.
What Pelosi is pushing is to have everyone mailed a ballot. People move. Things happen. For example, we received two different census requests with different code numbers on them--the street address had a different, but somewhat accurate name. This type of thing could easily happen with mailed ballots. People move. You could definitely have two or three families receiving ballots at the same address--and, it could be abused. Just like it has been abused at nursing homes.

This is several years old and may have been cleaned up some. But, it still happens. Unless you notify the Board of Registrars, they don't cross dead people off the list. But, Nancy wants to send them a ballot.

The whole point, there is a paper trail.[b] Fraud is virtually impossible.

+100. We should vote this way by default. Too much election tampering, create a trail. Provide secure collection ballot boxes manned by aameras and mail scanners. Bonus: Increase revenue for the USPS.
Hmmm. What if your ballot arrives after a fraudulent one? Which one counts?
What if someone else submits ballots for a household where the family has moved to another state. That could easily happen.
You are assuming that voter registrations are up to date and accurate.
