Our Montessori preprimary is doing some Zoom meetings, both for fun and for instruction. My kids are 4 and 6, and they enjoy it. They love to see their friends and teachers.

Daily 9am Zoom. The kids get to share or show and tell if they want, the teacher does a brief fun activity, like singing a song or teaching how to draw some animal. Sing happy birthday if it's someone's birthday.

Weekly lunch Zoom. Kids discuss what they're having for lunch (they love this and take it very seriously, it is so cute) and whatever else they want.

Weekly art Zoom. Kids do an easy craft led by teacher. Requires some supervision from an adult for younger kids.

Weekly music Zoom. Kids listen to bits of music and talk about it with the teacher.

1-on-1 instruction Zoom for 10 minutes. 2 x week for the oldest kids in their third year, 1 x week for remaining kids. Usually reading or prereading, but occasionally math or counting.

1-on-1 individual instruction Zoom to practice reading foreign language for 15 minutes. 2 x week for oldest kids only.

Weekly science Zoom. Teacher does an experiment, engages class in discussion.

Storytime Zoom. 1x or 2 x week.

I teach 3 year olds and we do zooms 1/week for about 25 minutes. It’s very interactive, but there are inevitably glitches.

Only half my class shows up and that’s FINE. Don’t force yourself child to do the zooms, it’s not what she needs or wants. There are other more important places to put your foot down. This is not one of them.

My daughter is 3 and her preschool is going daily Zoom preschool sessions that mostly consist of a teacher reading a story or singing songs or directing some kind of art project. The first week she'd sit there and watch but now whenever I try to tell her it's time for preschool she tells me 'in a little while' and continues whatever she was playing. She hasn't joined a session the past few days and has lost interest. Preschool is good for her because of the direct interaction with the teachers and her friends and Zoom just isn't a substitute especially for a 3 year old.

I think the Zoom sessions that preschools are doing are mostly to justify that they are still trying and that we parents should keep paying up because they are still working.... kind of.

How long is the Zoom session and what do they do exactly? I’m wondering if it’s just a teacher doing story time and if it’s engaging.

Our kids get a chance to chat with each other throughout the session, it's adorable.

That's sad - my four year old LOVES seeing her teachers and friends for 15-20 minutes every morning. It's usually 2 teachers and 5 or 6 children (out of a class of 12). The teachers do their typical morning circle time - greetings, weather, good morning song), and then show a craft. The kids who did yesterday's craft at home (usually one or two kids) will show it, then the teachers will sing a song and/or read a story. Then they sing a good-bye song and turn it off. It's lovely, it's the highlight of my kid's day!
