The original question posed by OP didn't really make any sense. Low fuel consumption and cheap are often positively correlated, but "fast" is almost always negatively correlated with both low fuel consumption and cheap. If you want fast, you have to spend more money and sacrifice on mpg almost always

Go get a Jetta.
I own a 2004 VW Jetta. It has 290k miles and drives like a charm. I bought it brand new and had no issues other than standard maintenance.
Meanwhile, we had to get rid of my wife's 2008 Toyota Camry 3 years ago at only 170k miles. Too many failures and expensive repairs.
No more Japanese crap.

Ford Mustang with EcoBoost turbo four. Fun and reliable.

I had a VW GTI, the mechanical sibling of the GLI.

I will confirm it was a blast to drive. WHEN IT RAN. I got it new, in 2013. Got rid of it in 2015, after it was towed to the dealer for the sixth time in 24000 miles. All electrical/sensor/Water Pump.

Issues: Waterpump x 2; ABS Sensor; Oil Pressure sensor (oil pressure was fine); Crankshaft sensor. This is one I can not remember...

When it ran, it was great. WHEN IT RAN.

NO YOU DO NOT GET A JETTA IF YOU CARE ABOUT COST. Because it will be sitting in some expensive European auto shop a lot of the time, waiting for Expensive European parts to replace the ones that crapped out mysteriously.

Agree, as much I love how well they drive, its going to be money pit. Plus the depreciation on VW's are huge.

The new Mazda6 higher-end trims have a turbo that is quite peppy, but not under $20k.

Maybe the eco turbo Mustang? Or you might get lucky and find a well-priced top of the line late model Accord with the turbo.
