This - we purchased small pitchers (likely meant for cream) and put milk in them so our younger son (I think around age 4), could get a bowl of cereal by himself in the morning. He was not strong enough to use the gallon jugs.

Yes, agree. OP, you can't control when you kid wakes up. You can at least try to control how they act when they do though. Find a way to keep your child quiet, either in his room or in a separate area of the house. My 4 year old usually has about 45 minutes worth of self regulated playing before I have to engage in the mornings. Set a snack and an activity out and maybe bribe him with something if he doesn't wake anyone else up.
