And $1000 for a college kid is not a nominal amount.

This summer our college-age DS and two of his male cousins are going to live and work at the beach. They will live in the house.
There is an extremely basic 'outbuilding' on the property. Think glorified shed. It has no bathroom, running water or kitchen. It's basically a simple bunk room with lights and a window AC that we have used as overflow bedrooms during family vacations.
One of many of DS's DC friends wants to live there for the summer. My BILs signed off on it but want to charge a nominal $333 a month rent ($1000 for the summer) and limit it to one kid because they will all being using one septic tank. They also want the chosen kid to sign a basic lease to cover damages.
So, I brought this up to the chosen boy's mom- who I'm very friendly with but not close close.
I thought she was going to faint. Her reaction was one of disgust. She actually thought her son was going to live rent free at out family beach house for three months.
Today I heard she was bad mouthing me to other friends, calling me a cheap skate, etc.
Do I go ballistic and dis-invite the kid?
Really special? GMAF break.
You sound like a complete piece work. Your son must be (should be) mortified that you're trying to charge a friend he invited rent to live in a shack. I probably wouldn't have bothered sh!t talking behind your back, I would have just told you to shove it.
Good grief.
OP here. Found the scum. Sorry you can't appreciate gorgeous acreage and historic property on the coast of NC. Too bad so sad you were raised broke (and probably in a trailer.)

You think it's reasonable for someone to charge rent to live in an unfinished shed without running water? Good thing the law disagrees with you. It's illegal.

Well for one thing it's illegal to charge rent for a dwelling in NC that doesn't have running water. But pish posh! The "chosen boy" is lucky to be gouged by a family that owns such a special house!![]()

Also calling $333/month for a glorified shed with no running water or kitchen "nominal rent" is hilarious. That's highway robbery.
OP here. The friend would use the kitchen, baths, electricity, water, and gas like all the others and undoubtedly hang out in the house all the time he wasn't sleeping. The other boys are living for free because... their family owns the house.![]()
You're charging him to camp. And no kidding their family owns the house. It doesn't change the fact that your son invited this kid under the implication he would be joining them in their fun "we have somewhere to stay" summer and it would be free and now you're trying to make a buck.
lol at the 'make a buck' comment. People who hold family vacation cottages for three generations on the coast of NC almost universally have generational family wealth. The idea that they saw dollars signs (and 1000 of them!!!!!) is patently laughable.

This was my first thought too. What's up with that OP?
I would bet it's a 'gift' to the cousins. I had a friend in undergrad whose family had a place at Dewey and she and her cousins were allowed exclusive use of the cottage during one summer while they worked at Funland. I spent a lot of time there that summer and can promise you the parents would not want to know what went down in that house![]()
