My mom, who is in her late 70's like tickets to concerts, and plays. My FIL likes sporting events.

I agree with Harry and David. My parents can buy anything they want but they would never think of getting Harry and David for themselves. Yet they LOVE it. Next up would be Wine of the Month Club or a gift certificate to a restaurant.

If you do something like the Kennedy Center then make it more like a gift certificate so they can choose the day/show/program. My parents would hate to be tied down to a single date, and I know the one date I would choose will of course be when they were planning on getting out of town for a trip. They would never tell me that I choose the one date they had plans for but still ...
