What sledding hill is lost?

The gentle one off near Quebec street that ended at the tennis courts. It was my favorite growing up - the one closer to the school is steep and fast and uncomfortable when you land.

It's maybe 60-70 feet between the street and the tennis courts - it's not even the length of one of the adjacent tennis courts and it had a mix of trees and bushes in it until a few months ago - I find it hard to believe too many people ever sledded there.

I sled there my entire youth. It’s a nice gentle sledding hill. Many kids would go there. And FYI- tregarron no longer allows sledding and it was super dangerous anyway since that hill led straight down into trees and a creek. And tregarron is ten blocks or so from Hearst. Not a great idea to trudge all the way over there to sled.

Stop talking about things you have no idea about and blowing off the facts posted by people who’ve kicked in the area for decades. Again, I support the pool, but yes there was a massive sitting down of old trees and yes the sledding hill will likely no longer be usable for sledding.

Cleveland Park folk are so incredibly entitled. I’m liberal but I hate how so many liberals act like they care about others and about helping folks at the bottom until it hits too close to home. If I lived next to the pool I wouldn’t be thrilled but it is only open for a few months. Stop trying to act like your opposition is for the greater good.

They didn't. Anyone in the neighborhood knows to go to Battery Kimble or Tregaron to sled.

They were all scrub and weed trees. They are replanting the hills in accordance with the stormwater management plan the neighbors on Springland Lane demanded.

Guys, I support the pool but this is simply not true. There were many beautiful old trees that were cut down and now the site is denuded.

The official line is that the trees cut were 'junk' trees. Unofficially, it was to create a sunny site for the pool.

DC is building a swimming pool in the park. You don't expect people to use a pool that is in the shade, do you? I can see why they didn't trumpet the fact that they would need to take down lots of trees, as it only would have inflamed the neighbors more.

I am not any of the PPs. I took an evening stroll by. Certainly looks "denuded" and squared off.

"There was no clear cutting (and yes I've been by) - the city removed a bunch of relatively worthless weed trees, many of which were choked with vines which is something that the immediate neighbors, if they'd actually been engaged with issues around the park, could have dealt with themselves over the years."

This is just a lie.

Fixed that for you - most folks with kids that I know are very much looking forward to finally having a pool in the neighborhood.

I'm not an immediate neighbor and would like a pool, but it's rude to say that people who care about Hearst Park are "whiny and entitled." Have you seen the clear-cutting and removal of over 100 trees from Hearst, something that DPR NEVER discussed with the community? The cutting completely changes the look and feel of the park, with impacts to shade, views and slope erosion. Why??!!

This was discussed ad nauseum in the 180 page pool thread.

The neighbors of this park were never engaged with this park until the pool proposal came up.

There was no clear cutting (and yes I've been by) - the city removed a bunch of relatively worthless weed trees, many of which were choked with vines which is something that the immediate neighbors, if they'd actually been engaged with issues around the park, could have dealt with themselves over the years.

But since the park has mostly been unused except for some illegal off leash dogs running around on the soccer field it is possible the neighbors never actually noticed.

And BTW there have long been water run-off issues at the park which you would know if you'd ever tried to use the soccer field for more than a dog park.

Please. The park slopes have been denuded, with over 100 trees removed. What is the plan by Mary Cheh and DPR to replant the park? Is there a plan?
