Fixed that for you.

Anyone who celebrates the confederacy is a fool.

Appomattox courthouse is also in VA. We could start celebrating that.

Parts of it are nice. Parts of it are butt ugly.

The same can be said of any state.

It IS still a state holiday: state employees have off. But NOVA municipalities don’t celebrate it.

There are a number of sensible bills in this year’s proposed bills that aim to nix the Lee-Jackson holiday and replace it With state holiday on Election Day each year. Write to your state reps in support.

You’re an idiot if you are unfamiliar with how non-southern northern Virginia is.

Really? Seems a lot of hate groups on NOVA based on this map below and one would guess they prefer things "the way they were."

https://www.splcenter.org/hate-map?state=VA

Granted, now your governor is trying to abolish Lee Jackson day and join the 20th century. But your republican lawmakers are putting up a stink about that. They believe in celebrating your heritage. Try to separate yourselves from the rest of your state, but you can't. Virginia is the south and a large amount of your population celebrate the Confederacy. Especially this Friday! Go on an have a nice time. And for those of you in state jobs getting the day off, enjoy that free time because your Generals earned it for you.

Yee-haw!

I’m sorry, but the SPL Center has jumped the shark. That list includes multiple “radical catholic” organizations as “hate groups”. Gimme a break!

Sounds about right to me.

Nope, not right. Ridiculous.

I guess if you're an antisemite you might feel that way...

https://www.splcenter.org/fighting-hate/extremist-files/ideology/radical-traditional-catholicism
"Adherents of radical traditional Catholicism, or “integrism,” routinely pillory Jews as “the perpetual enemy of Christ” and worse, reject the ecumenical efforts of the Vatican, and sometimes even assert that recent popes have all been illegitimate. These groups are incensed by the liberalizing reforms of the 1962-65 Second Vatican Council, which condemned hatred for the Jews and rejected the accusation that Jews are collectively responsible for deicide in the form of the crucifixion of Christ."

Sounds like they're hate groups to me.

You do know 4 slave holding states fought for the union?

So? While many people from those states did choose to fight against the US (traitors!), slavery wasn't as important there so overall the border states weren't willing to fight for it.

Maybe focus on the plank in your eye first?

I thought Dems just took the state legislature in the recent election, meaning, Rs controlled the state up till recently.

Also, MD is still controlled by Dems, much to the disgust of many moderates in MD. I guess you've never read any of the MD local politics threads.

As for the R governor in MD, he is a moderate, but if he ever suggested we celebrate a figure that is shrouded in racism, he'd get flamed and voted out.

I said state-wide.

Anonymous wrote:So typical. Some refute the existence of the holiday, many attack the OP, and others deflect to alternate facts about Virginia. The Republican blood runs through your veins. Your Republican state politicians support this holiday as part of your state heritage. There are parades and speeches this Friday. Attack and deflect all you wish, it's your destiny to continue to be the deep south.

And way to get cracking on the ERA! Rest of us approved that 40+ years ago. Again, welcome to the 20th century.

Geez. We've only had 1 week in office. Give us time to clear the rest of the good 'ole boys out.

I've lived in Va since 1980. I didn't hear of Lee Jackson Day until recently. I have no desire to celebrate Confederate generals. I celebrate MLK. I'm sure there are many white conservative republicans who celebrate it, but there is more to Va than conservative white republicans. My mixed race self being one of them, along with my mixed race children. I detest that big confederate flag on 95, but what can I do? People have freedom to express their confederate love, but it doesn't mean all Virginians do. I gladly wave my gay pride flag at them.
