This is such BS! We are not rich, we save a portion of our paycheck for a vacation each year, and yes it is skiing. We cannot afford ski in/ski out, brown paper bag our lunches (as we do everyday for work and school, which is how we save money) and we buy used equipment at ski swaps when we need something. Most of the time we drive to our destinations, especially if the kids school vacation is between two weekends giving us ten days of vacation. We are not rich, probably never will be, but it's how we choose to spend our vacations with our children. And we are certainly not elitists.

Yeah it costs at least $60 bucks per person for a lift ticket. Only the ultra rich can go.

I grew up in this area. Parents not wealthy but my mom is European and loves to ski. We learned young and would go a few times each season. We would drive to Massanutten or Round Top or whatever early am, ski all day, bring a lunch from home, and drive home at night. Just mom and kids as dad didn’t ski. We rented skis until we were adults and stopped growing. I’m sure we spent far less in a season than people spend on travel sports or swim club or vacations etc.

As an adult, I’ve seen the other side of skiing. Buying equipment, flying from east coast to the Rockies or Alps, lodging and meals and week long lift tickets, it is very expensive. My husband and I ski but rarely although I do still love it.

I consider horse sports to be elitist. Skiing, not necessarily. You don’t need to go to a fancy place to do it.

Ice hockey is super expensive to pursue as a sport/hobby. So, hockey players are elites too. And figure skaters. But we already know that because of their fancy outfits.

I grew up poor with poor people around me. I never went skiing as a child and have never gone as an adult. No one in my family has gone.

Golf is not as elitist as skying. Tennis is not elitist, it is t expensive. Horseback riding is elitist. Sailing is elitist. As an adult, I’ve been on boats and a friend had a fairly large power boat. Poor people can’t afford $800 for gas on a boat.

And in many places around the US! Many posters are giving real life examples. Just because CO has Vail doesn't mean there are no bare bones locals mountains. Same for VT, ME, and every state with hills and cold.
