Yes, but you still have to be a pretty good student to get accepted as a non-engineering applicant. I've known many good - not excellent but certainly respectable students who have not gotten into Tech at all, which is why I don't get how schools with lower profiles have lower acceptance rates. Also, I'll repeat a question I asked earlier. How in the heck does Liberty have a 24% acceptance rate? Are there things that colleges do to cook their numbers to make it seem like they have lower acceptance rates than they do? Is that the answer? That Tech isn't playing the same game that some of the other schools are?

Outside of VA when kids research top engineering programs, VT doesn't even crack the top 25. I know my nephew in NM who was interested in engineering didn't have VT on his list. It was all about Michigan, Purdue, GA Tech, UC San Diego.

Um no that’s not the key. That’s true of all public colleges in VA. The state limits how many students can be admitted from out of state. So again, how can other VA state colleges with lower stats such as CNU have lower acceptance rates?

I know a kid who just got deferred from Tech engineering ED with a 1600 SAT, GPA 3.6 (FCPS).

Ok this makes no sense to me. My nephew who graduated with a 4.5 GPA and a sat above 1500 was rejected from Tech engineering. He was accepted to UVA and Middlebury but rejected from Tech Engineering. I don’t see how that’s possible when looking at the acceptance rates from above.

Yes, as several posters have said, the kids that apply to Tech are the ones that really want to go there & are pretty damn sure they can. I have had 3 nieces/nephews apply to Tech in the last 5 years, all got in & went. For all three is was the school they wanted to attend since middle school with lots of family & friends have gone there. They applied and were accepted to other schools but picked Tech.

Except their yield is only 30.4%. So they don't all want to go their. It's a big time safety school for many students.

But how does this explain how Liberty has an acceptance rate of 24% and Lynchburg 64%?

I went to Tech (amazing school) and 10-15 years ago it was not considered a challenge to be accepted. I never worried about admission from my FCPS high school with decent stats.

I’m not sure what has changed; I have to imagine it’s self-selection like PPs said.
