Sorry, they don't do anything. The wipes are pointless. Take your phobias into your own hands or stay home.
Urine is sterile, but do you mind when you're using a public toilet and there's pee on the seat?
If there's a pool of sweat, you wipe it up, like like you would for pee on a seat. I don't wipe down dry toilet seats either before or after I use them.
If you're asking people to wipe down because "omg germs! bacteria! ick!" on a machine that is relatively dry after they used it, that's absurd. Your phobia is on you.

Life happens, you are 15 minutes late. Ok, fine. But you find an open spot with lots of room, or you don't take the class if it's too crowded. Don't impact another person's workout because YOU are late.

Only gross slobs don't wipe the machine down after they use it. Totally agree that it is very basic gym etiquette. Work out at home all by yourself if you don't want to be bothered with wiping down the equipment for others.
Do you wipe down door knobs after you use them too?
No. But I'm not sweating on them, either.
If I held onto it for 30 minutes while sweating all over, then yes, I would. It would be a courtesy for the next person.
If you're holding on to any machine for 30 minutes, you're doing it wrong.
