They stopped being as physical because they got tired and the 9 on UVA stayed bulky but got no calls

Yes UVA was tired. By the 2nd 1/2, all three UVA defenders had a yellows. If any of the three got another card, UVA would been a man down. Playing a man down on burnt out legs is no the way to go through life(or win a game).

I don’t think you get it.
NCAA rule allow all 11 players to be subbed out at once
Players can re- enter the game 1 time in 2nd half
So UVA with a lead and 3 players with yellow and united mightntactically have erred by not subbing in fresh legs to defend late in the 2nd half

Hindsight of course is 20/20.

But the original point was if UVA has tired players and a back line with yellows
That maybe the smart move was to sub. Alas UVA will never know.

There was a clear step down in talent with UVA subs in the back line. So UVA kept their starters in with tired legs and yellow cards.

The stepdown in talent from starter to sub is not as great as the step down from starter to playing down a man.
And at some point the lack of legs and speed cannot be overcome by "talent", you are better off going with fresh legs.
The starting outside back for UVA went down in game by injury.

Bell of UVA said after the game that UVA was tired:

Bell said fatigue played a major factor in the goal-fest.

“With such a short turnaround between the two games,” Bell said, “it sets the game up for transition. Especially in the overtime. Seeing it go to penalties wasn’t that surprising.”

“The game became pretty transitional, more than most,” Gelnovatch said. “Joe talked about fatigue being the reason for the goals. I would say yes. But when we scored, they scored, they scored, this thing became a different animal.

“It was two teams now going for it. Instead of protecting themselves, it was two teams punching each other. When you have those kinds of back-and-forth transitions, it’s tiring, especially when you played Friday.”

Subbing out Defenders in hindsight would have been wise. The rain games on Friday had to have sapped the energy from both teams.

We stayed out in the rain Friday night (was miserable) and watched both games and were there for Sunday night's final. For kid's that enjoy soccer, I recommend you take them down there in 2021 when it comes back to Cary no matter who is playing. Tickets, food, hotel were all cheap compared to the DC area and it was only about a 5 hour drive. They threw out soccer cup balls at the half of each game that were pretty cool, too.

We’re you connected with a player/players on one of the teams, PP? If not, I have say that I’m extremely impressed that you did this. Can’t have too many soccer super-fans in the US
