Yes she has to get permission. That is why she could not perform her songs at the last awards show.

Warning, it's a looong speech, but very much worth it. She calls out so many people and issues that cut across all industries....yet I am also a little putt off by it. Interested to hear thoughts from others.
Her father, her manager made a bad business deal and that’s why she doesn’t own the rights to her music. It’s not because she’s a woman, it’s because she’s uneducated and didn’t understand what was going on. She should have stayed in school. Sick of listening to her whine. Grow up Tay Tay.
This is sad. It sounds as though she and her dad were hoodwinked into agreeing to something that they did not understand. How would signing her right away to her own music have ever been beneficial to her? Why would any artist agree to that?
It's not o.k. to trick people like that.
Isn't her father in attorney? Perhaps she should sue him for making this bad deal on her behalf.

I have no clue why she keeps whining victim. The music industry will not change - the labels take chances on new artists they lose their investment on the vast majority.
Why should she have to buy back her own property? Did she get any money at all from the sale of her music?
Of course she gets scads if money from every song. She sold her ownership rights. Think of it this way: you sell a painting that was commissioned (you were paid to paint this for the owner). The owner then sells the painting to someone the artist doesn’t like. Do you think the artist has the right to take her painting back? She can certainly buy it back (as could Taylor).

Unfortunately, musicians aren't necessarily talented business people, and even when they are, they may make deals that weigh out differently early in their career vs later in their career.

I don't understand what these things are.
