We have a very large decorative coat rack in the foyer. None of our own coats go there (they are always in the hall closet). We don't like the idea of coats on a bed or people having to rummage through a large pile when there are lots of guests.

you must live somewhere with pretty boring weather.

We take our coats and put them in the master. This way we have an empty closet for our party guest.

We have a guest coat closet and coat rack in the entry. Casual visits, the guest usually chooses the coat rack because it's easier, I guess. It's also good for wet coats. When I was a child, they went on the bed.

If someone has bed bugs on their coat, they will probably end up in your bed either way. It’ll just take a week or two for them to follow the trail of your carbon dioxide to your bed while you sleep if they have to journey from the coat rack.

Growing up coats went on the bed. In my home I have room for one or two coats in the foyer closet. Some guest leave their coat/purse on the settee in the foyer. If we are having a party I have a coat rack. I take their coats and hang them up.

Sure!

It seems easier to just hang them up in the closet.

A dinner party for 8, sure, we'll make room in the coat closet. We also now have a bench in our foyer that is good for depositing a few coats. But a party for 40+? The coats go on the bed. Delivering and retrieving the coats is what kids are for.

OP's husband has lived either a very privileged or very underprivileged existence if he's never seen this.

If they’re in the house, they’re in the house.

If they’re on the coats, there on the coats, whether they’re in the closet or on the bed. “Bed” bugs can find a host on any fabric.

No, I'm thinking of the hosts having bed bugs and every guest laying their coat on the bed...

Exactly my point.

I own a niceSturdy rolling coat rack. I use it when I do laundry to hang things as I iron. It doubles as coat duty for a party. We park it just off the foyer.

Unless you are having a large party, you should have room or make room in your coat closet for guests. We also have a coat rack by our front door that we clear off before guests come if only a few are coming over for a casual meal or to hang out so they can use that instead.
