Is this the balloon sinus surgery? Drs are pushing it all over the DMV. I can't stand the adds for it in my ENTs office. And the other specialist had it too!

Sounds like your SIL didn't have a choice. Are you saying that after the sinus surgery she got the migraines and are suggesting be cautious about getting surgery?

Yes, she had no choice. Complications after surgery were very severe, and nobody could figure out what was causing her these insane migraines. Now, two years later she has high blood pressure, and it all kind of started with her sinus surgery. But, she had to have it done. So, I guess I am recommending that people hold off on surgery until absolutely necessary. I think what happened is that during surgery her nerve paths got damaged, and caused migraines, but nobody was certain. My mom, on the other hand, is a true hypochondriac, but she also has many health issues and is convincing her doctors to have surgeries every two years. Nobody knows anymore when mom truly is in pain, and when she is just "a pain."

Just stop sharing so much, jeez. Why are you telling your mom the details of a sinus infection? Also, you need a second opinion and likely just different antibiotics, not sinus surgery.

NP here: no comments on your mother's behavior, just strongly agreeing with posters who are questioning the sinus surgery recommendation.

I was dealing with debilitating sinus problems this summer. My condition just kept getting worse and worse. In the end, I saw 2 ENTs and a doctor who specializes in sinus issues. ENT 1 and sinus doctor said no surgery was needed.

ENT 2 showed me why my CAT scan clearly indicated that I needed surgery. She took me step by step through a review of my CAT scan. She was very persuasive and, as it turns out, very wrong. I'm so glad I got a third opinion from the sinus specialist, who identified the actual cause of the sinus problem - something that did not require surgery.

In your case, I'd recommend being very skeptical of a doctor who recommends sinus surgery for an infection that's only lasted a few weeks. Get a second opinion. I know you're probably in a lot of pain, and worn down from it, but it's possible surgery might not be the right answer.

It's not her responsibility to change. It's your responsibility to adjust your expectations of her.

Things don't go well when you tell Mom this much. Learn from it. If you need emotional support, look for it elsewhere despite her saying she wants to know.
